After a series of 2nd and 3rd places since Melissa Reid has turned professional in 2008, now with this victory under her belt, the floodgates could open. She could now take the Tour by storm and take over from Laura Davies as the big name in European golf. With Annika Sorenstam in retirement, the top spot is up for grabs and Melissa looks the girl to take it on.
The National Golf Club’s course again proved to be one of the toughest courses the Ladies have to play in the season. Only 3 players finished the event under par - Melissa Reid (-3). Christel Boeljon and Iben Tinning both at (-1). The cut came at 8 over proving the stern test that the National Golf Course presents.
Melissa’s tee shots were probably the key to her success this week. She split the narrow tree lined fairways from day one. She did put herself in a difficult position on the 17th in the final round when she missed the green left with her second shot, but played a delicate chip to a tough back left pin position to save par. A par at the tricky 18th was good enough to seal victory by 2 shots.
Iben Tinning set a new course record with a 5 under par (68) in the first round, but could not quite sustain that form for the last 2 rounds.
A fabulous finish to the greatest tournament ever to be staged in Turkey, more than 1,000 spectators stayed right through to the conclusion of the tournament. The appearance of the great Laura Davies and a host of International stars attracted far more interest from fans than we expected. This created a great atomosphere for the players, spectators, TV coverage and was also good for the sponsors.
Laura Davies did at one time threaten to challenge for the lead early in the final round getting to 1 under after 6 but a couple of wayward drives saw her challenge waver and she finished in a tie for 8th.
